When we say our bedding is made in New Zealand, we mean all of it. The fibre comes from New Zealand farms, and it is carded, quilted and sewn into duvet inners at our family-owned factory in Mangere, Auckland, where we have made bedding since 2002.
What NZ made bedding means at Kiwi Wool
The words NZ made can cover a lot of ground. For some brands it means a product designed here and filled or sewn somewhere else. For others it means a New Zealand label sewn onto an imported inner. We think you deserve to know exactly what you are buying and where it was made.
At Kiwi Wool the fibre is New Zealand alpaca and New Zealand wool, ethically sourced from New Zealand farms. Every duvet inner and pillow is made in our own factory in Mangere, by our own team, on our own machines. We are a family-owned business, and we have been doing this for more than 22 years.
Our motto is simple: work hard, sleep easy. Because we make everything ourselves, we can stand behind it with a 3-year warranty and answer any question about how it was made.
From raw fibre to finished duvet
A duvet inner looks simple, but there is a lot of work between a bale of fibre and a finished product. This is how it happens in our factory.
1. Selecting the fibre
We choose high-quality alpaca and wool fibres from New Zealand farms. Our wool is double-washed without harsh chemical agents, which removes the natural lanolin and plant residue while keeping the fibre’s loft and performance. Alpaca fibre is naturally free from lanolin, so it needs no such treatment and stays smooth against sensitive skin.
2. Carding the fibre
Carding opens and combs the fibre into a light, even web. That web is then layered by our crosslapper to build the fill up to the weight we want, measured in grams per square metre, or GSM. A 200 GSM summer inner and a 500 GSM winter inner start with the same kind of fibre; the difference is how much of it goes into the fill. Our duvet GSM guide explains what each weight is for.
3. Quilting on a single-needle machine
Once the fill is inside its cotton cover, the duvet is quilted on our single-needle machine. The machine sews one stitch at a time along a programmed pattern, holding the fibre evenly in place across the whole duvet. This is slower than mass-produced multi-needle quilting, but it gives a more even fill without thin patches or cold spots.
4. Sewing and finishing
Our team sews and finishes each inner at the bench, closing the edges and checking the seams and stitching. Some inners, like our 350 GSM bound edge alpaca duvet, are given a bound edge for extra seam strength.
5. Checking and packing
Every finished duvet is checked before it is bagged for dispatch. Orders are generally shipped within 5 working days and delivered by Aramex, usually within 7 days across New Zealand.
Why single-needle quilting matters
The quilting pattern is not decoration. It decides whether the fill stays where it should after months of use. A single-needle machine follows each line of the pattern precisely, so the fibre is anchored evenly across the duvet. Multi-needle production lines run faster, but the fill can end up uneven, and uneven fill means some parts of the bed are warmer than others.

The covers: certified cotton, down-proof and pre-shrunk
The cover matters as much as the fill. Ours are 100% cotton, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests the fabric for harmful substances. The cotton is woven tightly enough to be down-proof, so fine fibres stay inside, and it is pre-shrunk so the duvet keeps its finished size wash after airing. Our alpaca pillow uses a 400 thread count cotton cover.
