How to choose a super king duvet inner
Start with the season you sleep worst in, then pick the fill. Alpaca is the lighter choice and wool is the heavier, cocooning choice. Super king or king: which size do you need?
A New Zealand super king mattress is about 183 x 203 cm. Our super king inner is 265 cm wide, which leaves roughly 41 cm hanging over each side. A king inner is 240 cm wide, so on the same mattress you get about 28 cm each side. That difference is what stops a cold gap opening when one of you rolls over.
If your bed is a king (167 x 203 cm), the king duvet inner is the right fit, although some people choose a super king for a deeper drape. Both sizes are 210 cm long. Our NZ duvet size guide has every size in one chart.
Why weight matters more at this size
A super king holds more fill than any other size, so GSM adds up quickly. Our 500 GSM wool super king weighs about 4.2 kg and the 350 GSM alpaca about 3.2 kg. Some sleepers love the anchored feel of a heavy wool inner. Others find it hard to turn under.
Alpaca fibre is semi-hollow, so it traps warm air while staying light. Our rule of thumb is that alpaca is around 25% warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool, which is why the 450 GSM alpaca is our usual recommendation for a super king that needs to be warm but not heavy.
Sharing a super king
Most super kings are shared, and two people rarely run at the same temperature. The alpaca duvet combo lets you use the 200 GSM inner in summer, the 350 in the shoulder seasons and both buttoned together in winter. Tip. Measure your mattress width and add at least 60 cm for overhang. If the total is more than 240 cm, buy a super king inner.
