How to choose a king duvet inner
Decide on warmth first. Our temperature guide recommends 200 GSM alpaca for summer, 250 to 350 GSM alpaca or 350 to 400 GSM wool for spring and autumn, and 400 to 500 GSM alpaca or 450 to 600 GSM wool for winter. If GSM is new to you, the duvet GSM guide explains it in plain terms.

Wool gives the heavier, tucked-in feel many of us grew up with. Alpaca gives similar warmth with less weight because the fibre is semi-hollow and holds more air. Both are naturally anti-bacterial and resistant to dust mites, and both wick moisture so you stay dry rather than clammy.
King on a king, or king on a queen?
On a king mattress (167 x 203 cm) a 240 cm wide inner hangs about 36 cm over each side, which is comfortable for two people without the edges dragging. On a queen mattress (153 x 203 cm) the same inner gives about 43 cm each side. That is why a king inner is a common choice for couples who share a queen bed and want more to hold on to.
If you have a super king mattress at 183 cm wide, a king inner leaves only about 28 cm each side. Step up to the super king duvet inner instead. The NZ duvet size guide lists every mattress and inner size side by side.
Tip. A king inner is 210 cm long, the same as every other Kiwi Wool size. Extra width is where the difference is, so measure width first.
Weight and warmth in a king size
Our 500 GSM wool king weighs about 3.9 kg, the 450 GSM alpaca about 3.5 kg and the 350 GSM alpaca about 3.0 kg. If you like to feel the duvet on you, the wool is the one. If you want winter warmth that you barely notice, the 450 alpaca is around 25% warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool by our rule of thumb.
