Duvet sizes in NZ follow the bed rather than the mattress exactly: a duvet inner needs to be wider than the mattress so it drapes over both sides. This guide lists every standard New Zealand bed size with the matching Kiwi Wool duvet inner in centimetres, plus advice on overhang, couples, king single beds and duvet covers.

NZ duvet sizes at a glance
New Zealand mattress sizes are fairly standard across brands. Duvet inners are not, so always check the centimetres. The table below shows the standard mattress for each bed size and the Kiwi Wool inner we make for it.

How much overhang do you want?
Overhang is the amount of duvet that hangs down each side of the mattress once it is centred. Around 30 to 40 cm each side is the sweet spot for most people. It is enough to tuck under your shoulder, enough to stop a draught when you roll over, and enough for two people to share without a nightly tug of war.
Less than 20 cm looks skimpy and lets cold air in. More than 45 cm starts to pool on the floor and can drag the duvet off the bed. Deep mattresses eat into overhang, so if your mattress is 30 cm or thicker, treat the numbers in the table as a minimum.
Remember that length matters too. All our inners are 210 cm long, which suits standard 188 and 203 cm mattresses with room to pull the duvet up to your chin.
Sizing up: couples and tall sleepers
If two of you share the bed, sizing up one step is the single best thing you can do for a peaceful night. A King inner on a Queen bed gives each person about 15 cm more to hold. A Super King on a King bed does the same. The extra width also helps when one partner runs hot and likes to kick a leg out while the other stays wrapped up, which we cover in our post on thermoregulating duvets for couples.
Tall sleepers can also benefit. Our inners are 210 cm long, so going up a size will not add length, but the extra width means you can pull the duvet higher without uncovering your feet when you lie diagonally.
Rule of thumb. Sleeping alone: match the bed size. Sharing: go one size up. Sharing with a duvet thief: go two sizes up and buy a bigger cover.
King single beds: which duvet inner?
A king single mattress is 107 x 203 cm, and we do not make a King Single inner. You have two good options. A Double inner at 180 x 210 cm gives about 36 cm of overhang each side, which is generous and works well for teenagers who like to wrap up. A Single inner at 140 x 210 cm gives about 16 cm each side, which looks neater in a small room but leaves less to tuck.
Most of our king single customers choose the Double. It is the same length as the Single, so nothing changes at the head and foot, and the extra width makes the bed feel more like a proper grown-up bed. Read more on our single and double duvet inners page.
Duvet inner sizes vs duvet cover sizes
A duvet cover should be the same size as the inner, or very close to it. A cover that is too large lets the inner slide around and bunch in one corner. A cover that is a few centimetres smaller than the inner gives a plumper, fuller look because the fill is gently compressed, and many people prefer that.
Cover sizes in New Zealand shops are usually named by bed size, but the actual centimetres vary by brand, so measure your cover before you buy an inner. If your cover is 210 x 210 cm, buy a Queen inner. If it is 240 x 210 cm, buy a King. Corner ties inside the cover help keep any inner in place.
Australian, UK and US sizes: check the centimetres
Bed and duvet names do not travel well. In Australia a duvet inner is called a quilt or a doona, and while Australian Queen and King sizes are close to ours, an Australian Super King quilt is commonly 270 x 240 cm, much bigger than our 265 x 210 cm Super King. The UK and the US both use different names and dimensions again, and a US king bed is a different shape from a New Zealand king.

How to measure your bed
- Strip the bed and measure the mattress width and length with a tape, not the frame.
- Measure the mattress depth. Anything over 30 cm deserves a size up.
- Decide how much overhang you want each side, then add twice that number to the mattress width.
- Compare the result with our inner widths: 140, 180, 210, 240 or 265 cm.
- Check your duvet cover matches the inner you are about to buy.

Yes, or a few centimetres smaller. A matching cover keeps the inner from sliding around, and a slightly smaller cover gives a plumper look. A cover that is much bigger than the inner will bunch and leave empty corners.
Can I put a king duvet on a queen bed?
Yes, and many couples do. A 240 x 210 cm King inner on a 153 cm wide queen mattress gives about 43 cm of overhang each side, which is more to share and less to fight over. Make sure your duvet cover is king size too.
