Alpaca and Wool Quilts Shipped from New Zealand to Australia

Looking for an alpaca quilt in Australia that is filled with 100% New Zealand alpaca and made in Auckland? Kiwi Wool ships across the Tasman. In New Zealand we call them duvet inners, and you may call them quilts or doonas. They are the same thing: the fibre-filled inner that goes inside your quilt cover.

Why Australians buy quilts from a New Zealand maker

Kiwi Wool has been a family-owned bedding maker in Auckland since 2002. We use New Zealand alpaca and New Zealand wool, ethically sourced from New Zealand farms, and we card, quilt and sew every inner in our own factory. There is no imported fill and no middleman between you and the people who made your quilt.

Alpaca fibre is semi-hollow, so it traps insulating air while staying light, and it breathes and wicks moisture. It is naturally free from lanolin, which is why it suits sensitive skin and allergy-prone sleepers, and it resists dust mites, bacteria and mildew. Our New Zealand wool is double-washed without harsh chemicals and keeps a dry, temperate sleeping environment through the night.

Every inner is quilted on our single-needle machine for an even fill, and finished in a 100% cotton cover that is down-proof, pre-shrunk and certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Across the range we have 39 published customer reviews, and every product is rated between 4.8 and 5 out of 5.

Our alpaca and wool quilts

The 450 GSM alpaca inner and the 500 GSM wool inner are our winter weights. The 350 GSM alpaca inner suits the mild seasons, and the 200 GSM alpaca inner is our lightest summer quilt. The Alpaca Duvet Combo includes a 200 and a 350 that button together for winter. We also make a wool pillow and an adjustable alpaca pillow.

Australian bed sizes and Kiwi Wool quilt sizes

Our inners are made to New Zealand sizes, which are close to Australian sizes in most cases. Use this table to pick the right one for your bed.

Australian bedKiwi Wool size to chooseKiwi Wool dimensions
SingleSingle140 x 210 cm
King SingleDouble, for more overhang180 x 210 cm
DoubleDouble180 x 210 cm
QueenQueen210 x 210 cm
KingKing240 x 210 cm
Super KingSuper King265 x 210 cm

Two notes on the larger sizes. An Australian king quilt is commonly 245 x 210 cm, so our King at 240 x 210 cm is a close match. An Australian super king quilt is commonly 270 x 240 cm, while our Super King is 265 x 210 cm. It will fit an Australian super king bed, but it will hang shorter down the sides and foot than a local super king quilt, so please measure before you order. Our duvet size guide has more on overhang.

Choosing a warmth for the Australian climate

We use GSM, grams of fill per square metre, rather than a warmth rating. Our own temperature guide is a good starting point.

Season and climateAlpaca quiltWool quilt
Summer, hot climate200 GSM200 to 300 GSM
Spring and autumn, mild climate250 to 350 GSM350 to 400 GSM
Winter, cold climate400 to 500 GSM450 to 600 GSM

In the warmer states, the 200 GSM alpaca inner is usually enough on its own for most of the year. For milder climates the 350 GSM alpaca inner is the everyday choice. In the cooler southern states and the highlands, the 450 GSM alpaca or 500 GSM wool inner will carry you through winter. If your seasons swing widely, the Alpaca Duvet Combo gives you a 200 and a 350 that button together to 550 GSM for winter. Read the duvet GSM guide and our all-seasons duvet page for more.

Care and warranty

Our inners are dry clean only. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. Spot clean small marks with minimal water, and air your quilt outdoors periodically, alpaca in the shade and wool in the sun, to refresh the loft. Natural fibre has a light natural scent when new that fades with airing. Full instructions are in our care guide.

All Kiwi Wool products carry a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects such as seam slippage or fabric faults. Because of hygiene rules, quilts and pillows cannot be returned unless faulty, so please check size and weight carefully before ordering, or ask us first. If an item arrives faulty or incorrect, contact us as soon as possible.

Which Kiwi Wool size fits an Australian queen bed?

Our Queen at 210 x 210 cm matches an Australian queen quilt. Our King at 240 x 210 cm is close to the Australian king size of 245 x 210 cm. Our Super King is 265 x 210 cm, which is shorter than the 270 x 240 cm quilt common in Australia, so measure your bed first.

Is an alpaca quilt warmer than a wool quilt?

For the same weight of fill, yes. Alpaca fibre is semi-hollow and is around 25% warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool, which is why our 450 GSM alpaca inner sits alongside our 500 GSM wool inner as a winter weight. Our alpaca vs wool comparison goes into detail.
