One all season duvet inner for NZ is a tall order, because a bedroom in July has nothing in common with the same room in January. Our answer is the Alpaca Duvet Combo: a 200 GSM inner and a 350 GSM inner, made in Auckland from 100% New Zealand alpaca, that button together into a 550 GSM duvet for winter.
Use one, the other, or both. Eleven customers have reviewed the combo so far, every one at five stars. Prices and stock for the combo and for the two inners on their own are live below.

How the all-seasons combo works
The combo is two complete duvet inners, each cased in down-proof, pre-shrunk 100% cotton certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Buttons along the edges join them into one duvet when you want the full 550 GSM. Unbutton them and you have a summer inner and a shoulder-season inner.
| Inner | GSM | Season | On its own or together |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200GSM 100% Alpaca Duvet Inner | 200 | Summer | On its own |
| 350GSM 100% Alpaca Duvet Inner | 350 | Spring and autumn | On its own |
| Both buttoned together | 550 | Winter | Together |
Those weights follow our temperature guide, which recommends 200 GSM alpaca for hot conditions, 250 to 350 GSM for mild, and 400 to 500 GSM for cold. Buttoned together the combo sits at the top of the winter band. The duvet GSM guide explains the scale.
A year in a New Zealand bedroom
| Months | Typical conditions | Suggested inner |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Warm, often humid nights | 200 GSM alone |
| March to May | Cooling evenings, mild days | 350 GSM alone |
| June to August | Cold nights, frosts in the south | 200 + 350 buttoned together (550 GSM) |
| September to November | Warming up, changeable | 350 GSM alone |
Treat this as a starting point. A well-insulated home in Auckland may stay on the 350 all winter, while an unheated room in Dunedin may want the full 550 from May to September. Because alpaca is semi-hollow and breathes, the 550 GSM combination is warm without leaving you damp.
Why alpaca for an all-seasons duvet
Alpaca fibre is around 25% warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool by our rule of thumb, so even the buttoned 550 GSM winter duvet is not a heavy one. It is naturally free from lanolin, anti-bacterial, mildew-resistant and resistant to dust mites, and it wicks moisture away from the body all year. That is what lets a single system feel right in both January and July.
If you prefer the weight of wool for winter, pair a 200 GSM alpaca inner for summer with our 500 GSM wool winter inner instead. You lose the buttons but keep the seasonal switch.
Couples with different needs
Two people rarely want the same duvet. The combo helps because the transition seasons are where most arguments happen, and a 350 GSM alpaca is light enough for the warm sleeper while still covering the cold one. In winter the buttoned 550 GSM is warm enough for both without the heft of a heavy wool.

Tip. Buy the combo in the size that fits your bed, not one size up. The two inners are made to button together edge to edge, so they must be the same size.
One purchase instead of two duvets
Buying a summer inner and a winter inner separately means two products and two decisions. The combo gives you three warmth levels from one purchase, and both inners slide into the same duvet cover. It is our most reviewed product and the one our customers buy again for the next bedroom.
Storing the inner you are not using
Air the spare inner outdoors in the shade, make sure it is cool and completely dry, then store it somewhere ventilated rather than in a sealed plastic bag. The duvet care guide has the full routine, including how to refresh an inner after months in the cupboard.
Sizes, care and warranty
The combo comes in single, double, queen, king and super king. See the NZ duvet size guide for dimensions, or go straight to queen, king or super king duvet inners.
Both inners are dry clean only and should be aired regularly. NZ orders over $150 NZD ship free, orders are generally sent within 5 working days, and the combo is covered by our 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Frequently asked questions
What is an all seasons duvet inner?
It is a duvet system with two inners of different weights that can be used separately or joined together. The Kiwi Wool combo pairs a 200 GSM and a 350 GSM alpaca inner that button together to 550 GSM for winter.
Is 550 GSM warm enough for a New Zealand winter?
Yes. Our temperature guide recommends 400 to 500 GSM alpaca for cold conditions, and 550 GSM sits above that band. It suits unheated bedrooms and colder regions.
Can I buy the 200 and 350 GSM inners separately?
Yes, both are sold on their own. The combo is the two together with buttons to join them. See the alpaca duvet range for all options.
Do the two inners fit in one duvet cover?
Yes. Buttoned together they go into a single duvet cover in the same size. When you use one inner alone it fits the same cover.
How many reviews does the combo have?
Eleven published reviews, all at five stars, making it our most reviewed product. You can read them on the product page or on our customer reviews page.
